Dave Grohl SXSW Keynote Speech

Dave Grohl, SXSW,

Today, Dave Grohl took to the stage at SXSW, donned drugstore hipster glasses, and delivered one hell of an inspirational keynote speech.

He talks about hanging with last year’s speaker, Bruce Springsteen (you know, no big deal, just THE BOSS), his humble beginnings as a young punk rocker in the DC area, demonstrates “multitrack recording” using two tape recorders, describes his life-changing years with Nirvana, Kurt Cobain (of course), recording Nevermind at Sound City (the studio he made a film about), changing the world, the again life-altering aftermath that resulted in Foo Fighters, and finally  becoming a cool dad. His mantra throughout the speech is that “the musician comes first.” He stresses the ultimate importance of the human element in music, communicating without words, finding your own voice, and screaming it out til it’s gone. Weirdly, though this is a tech blog, I share the same values and that is why time and again, no matter what toys come out, I always return to the guitar for inspiration.

Grohl is undoubtedly at SXSW this year to promote his new movie, and although he preaches the DIY ethos of his youth, he has become over the course of his astounding career too hugely successful to be considered ‘indie.’ But the thing is, he HAS followed the beat of his own drum and forged his path on his own terms, and is still the living embodiment of RAWK. He is today’s rock superhero, in a world where there may not really be any more on the way. Although he has entered the pantheon of  immortal ‘classic’ rockers, Dave is one of the last of these dinosaurs championing the rock and roll dream and telling you to pick up a guitar and start a band. So if you haven’t already, watch his speech and BE INSPIRED, punk!

Sound City Soundtrack: Grohl+Homme+Reznor’s Mantra

Sound City, Reel to Reel, Dave Grohl

Have you seen Dave Grohl’s film Sound City yet?

The soundtrack is coming out March 12th. It features a ridiculous cast of music legends, including Sir Paul McCartney, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear of Nirvana, who debuted their track “Cut Me Some Slack” at the Madison Square Garden Hurricane Sandy Benefit last year. Dave has been playing shows all over the world with different configurations of the loose collective he calls the Sound City Players, which will be making a stop at SXSW March 14th. Grohl is also the keynote speaker of the festival this year.

Watch this sweet behind-the-scenes video of Dave banging the skins, while Josh Homme slappa da bass and Trent Reznor tickles the ivories, as they record the epic 7+ minute ‘Mantra.’ The result is, predictably, a little bit Foo, with a dash of Queens, on a bed of Nails.

This is just the instrumental in its glorious birthing stage. The finished version has vocals on it.

Soundgarden ‘By Crooked Steps’ [Video] Directed By Dave Grohl

Dave Grohl, Soundgarden, Chris Cornell, Kim Thayil, Ben Shepard, Matt Cameron

Lots of great videos coming down the pipe this week… Gotta be grateful for that! This one’s ‘By Crooked Steps’ from the latest Soundgarden album, King Animal. And it was directed by none other than…[drumroll!] Daaaaaaave Grooooooohl!

This isn’t the first time Dave has stepped into the directors chair. As we told you last year, he has a full length film premiering in theaters TODAY (special one night only screening across the US). Sound City opens in major cities tomorrow February 1st, and is available for download right now at http://buy.soundcitymovie.com. Dave is also planning to promote his film by hitting the road with a supergroup called The Sound City Players, which includes Stevie Nicks, John Fogerty, Lee Ving, Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick and Rick Springfield.

ANYWAY, back to the SOUNDGARDEN video (way to share the spotlight Dave)! Mr. Grohl is known for his tongue in cheek humor on early Foo Fighter’s videos, and he brings it back for this clip. Let’s just say it’s Sons of Anarchy with a twist:

Did you spot Deadmau5 playing the cop at the end?

Dave Grohl: Coolest Dude Ever?

Dave Grohl, Foo Fighters, Sound City

Dave Grohl recently announced that Foo Fighters was going on hiatus. Not too worry, what this has meant in the past is that Mr. Grohl just needs to get a bunch of other projects out of his system. To prove my point, Dave went and drummed on the new Queens of the Stone Age record and MADE A MOVIE.  Just to prove that he’s the best at everything, basically.

And so without further ado, here is the long awaited trailer to the much talked about Sound City, a film Dave directed about the legendary studio where Nirvana’s Nevermind was recorded, featuring commentary from rock royalty like Krist Novoselic, Josh Homme, Trent Reznor, Lars Ulrich, Tom Petty, Rivers Cuomo, Frank Black, Rick Rubin, the list goes on and on. Watch this:

Sound City will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. You can pre-order a DRM Free Download for just $10 and get immediate access to “super sweet stuff to tide you over until the film is available on 2/1/2013” at http://buy.soundcitymovie.com/

Also, LOTS of preview material here: http://soundcitymovie.tumblr.com/

And now, for all you pre-orderers out there, a few words from Dave himself:

Hey there….

Thanks for scraping up your hard earned dough and buying the movie

direct from our site! We’re stoked! Hope you love it as much as we do….

     Ummm………Holy shit! I made a movie!

I started this project a little over a year ago with ONE of my good

old friends (Jim Rota from the band Fireball Ministry). That’s

right….just me, my drinking buddy, and a crazy idea that we should tell

the story of a studio we had loved hanging around for years, and our

heartbreak to see it close. It soon blossomed into something truly epic! I

don’t think either of us ever imagined our little project would become

what it is now. Like all the best things in life, it just…….happened.

From day one, it was the most incredible experience of my life. I

swear. Sitting down with Neil Young talking about recording guitars, John

Fogerty telling me about the day he decided to become a musician, Stevie

Nicks telling me the story of how she joined Fleetwood Mac, Trent Reznor

schooling me on the world of computers and digital technology, etc etc

etc…..can you imagine? All I had to do was listen…I am the luckiest

man on earth.

And, being a completely independent film, no one told us how or what

to do! Me and my crew of under 20 people did it OUR way. It was like a keg

party with a camera. WE got to tell the story of a place we all held so

dear. WE wanted to do it justice. And I think we did.

But, SOUND CITY is only part of the story…..

What is it that happens when 4 people turn on, plug in, and really

play that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up? What is it

about those moments when you hear something and it immediately puts its

hooks in you, and you feel…..understood? What is it that will inspire

the next generation of kids wanna do what I did when I was a little punk

growing up in Springfield, Virginia? That feeling like, “Wait……I can

do this too…..”

That’s what I’m talking about. That human connection. That human

feel. That human sound…that isn’t perfect…but it’s sooooo good.

I really feel like SOUND CITY is my life’s most important work. I

hope you do too.

Psyched that you get to see it! Show it to your friends! Get

together, start a band, sound like shit, and change the world. GO!

Thank you, thank you, thank you………Dave
